Although wine production in Chile is centuries old due to its introduction by early Spanish settlers, it is only in the last few decades of the XX century that local wineries have established more advanced wine-making methods and practices resulting from elite consulting by French, Australian and Californian enologists. This has led to an increase of international contacts and joint venture opportunities, namely with French and U.S. vineyards. As a result, Chilean wine has elevated in prestige to be ranked amongst the best of the world.
The Maipo Valley is Chile's oldest and most famous growing area. It's a subregion within the larger central valley region and lies just south of Santiago, Chile's capital city. Although Maipo isn't the largest area, it contains a considerable concentration of vineyards and a large representation of important producers, largely due to its close proximity to Santiago. Ocean breezes and elevation provide a number of cool growing areas within the region. The official areas within the Maipo Valley are Buin, Isla de Maipo, Melipilla, Pirque, Pueto Alto, Santiago, and Talagante. For the most part, this is red-wine country, with cabernet sauvignon the most celebrated and widely planted variety. There are also good examples of chardonnay, merlot, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, and sémillon being produced.
Maipo Valley Wine Tour
and Visit to the Cascada de las Animas Nature Sanctuary
Combine this tour with an overnight stay at Cascada de las Animas in one of our comfortable cabins or rooms!
Our driver will pick you up directly from your hotel or the Santiago Airport or the Valparaiso cruise ship dock to take you 27 km. southeast of Santiago to the town of Pirque in the Maipo River valley where you will visit one of the oldest, largest and most beautiful vineyards in Chile, “La Viña Concha y Toro.”
The visit starts at the estate entrance where you will be received by a bilingual wine specialist who will guide you through the winery and invite you to appreciate and learn about Concha y Toro and its long standing wine-making tradition.
The tour will continue into the winery´s ancient estate, founded in 1883 where you will view the beautifully landscaped gardens and the “Casona,” the grand house exterior, what was once the summer residence of the Concha y Toro family decades back.
Out in the vineyards, amongst the rows of grapes, you will learn about the growth and development of the grape vines and the dedicated care they require. Later, on the terrace, while enjoying the splendid view of the “Antiguas Terrazas de Pirque” vineyards, you will have the opportunity to taste Casillero del Diablo wine.
One of the most significant attractions of the vineyard are its ancient wine cellars. Here the guide will explain the techniques, processes and materials needed for wine production. Amongst the cellars you visit will be the one where the Casillero del Diablo legend was born.
The tour ends with a visit to the wine bar, an ideal space to taste fine wines.
After ending the tour of the vineyard you board our comforable van to start a scenic tour into the Cajon del Maipo, climbing Volcano Road until arriving at the Cascada de Las Animas Nature Sanctuary. At Cascada de las Animas you will enjoy an excellent lunch in our tranquil restaurant overlooking the rapids of the Maipo River. Afterwards meet your tour guide and prepare yourself for a 1.5 hour walking tour into the nature sanctuary that includes a safe and exciting zip-line crossing over the Maipo river and a hike to the spectacular waterfall of the spirits, “Cascada de Las Animas.”
Our zip-line river crossing is perhaps one of the most exciting activities that we offer. Suspended 25 meters above the Maipo River, twin cables are stretched over 170 meters across the river canyon providing one of the longest rides of this type in Chile. With velocities approaching 50 kph, participants are treated to a breathtaking scenic ride. As are all of our adventure activities, these events are carefully designed and constructed, and are controlled by one of our professionally trained staffers to insure the total safety of all participants.
The waterfall trek takes you into the nature sanctuary along a well maintained trail to the spectacular "Cascada de las Animas" (Waterfall of the Spirits). The Cascada is actually a series of three waterfalls which drop over 50 meters (150 feet). Once reaching the base of the first falls you may continue up a steep trail of moderate difficulty which takes you the the base of the first (and highest) of the falls. During the summer months, you can enjoy a refreshing dip into one of the pools at the base of the falls (be sure to bring your swim suit!). Afterwards, we will head back down the trail ending our walk at the entrance gate to the sanctuary.
