Located in central San Alfonso only four blocks (approximately 500 meters) from the Cascada de las Animas main entrance, Hostal La Casa Grande is a traditional Chilean hostel that is open year round. The hostel has four individual rooms, two with private baths, and two with a shared bath. Rooms are priced relatively low for budget minded travelers and include a very basic continental breakfast consisting of toast, jam, juice and tea or coffee.
Built in the 1930’s, the building was purchased by the Astorga family and used as its main family residence during the 1970’s and 80’s. In 2003, the residence was completely remodeled and reopened as a hostel. It features a large living/common area dominated by a stone fireplace, high, wood beam ceilings and tile floors. The hostel has one second floor bedroom with queen sized bed, private bath, and balcony, one first floor bedroom with queen bed and private bath, and two first floor bedrooms with two single beds and shared baths. There is a comfortable dining room and an outdoor patio for enjoying for relaxing.
Outside you will find beautiful flower gardens and spectacular views of the multicolored walls of the Maipo Canyon. On summer weekends, a local crafts fair can often be found at the Plaza San Alfonso only two blocks away, and food items can be found at a local grocery market just outside your door.
All guests have full access to the Cascada de las Animas Tourist Center, including pool access, free treks to the waterfalls, and reduced prices on selected activities like our Maipo River rafting trips and horseback riding trips. Special meals are available to order, as is room service - or you can take advantage of our restaurant within the Cascada de las Animas resort or one of the other local restaurants.
The hostel is run in a very relaxed and informal manner and guests are encouraged to make themselves at home. Be aware that the hostel is located near public areas so noise can sometimes be a problem at night, especially during weekends and holidays.
